What is the S&P/ASX 200?

The S&P/ASX 200 captures the 200 largest companies on the Australian Securities Exchange by float-adjusted market capitalisation, covering roughly 80% of total Australian equity market value. It has been the country's primary institutional benchmark since the early 2000s, replacing the broader All Ordinaries for most professional uses.

History

Origin & evolution

Launched in April 2000, the index is maintained by S&P Dow Jones Indices in partnership with the ASX. Constituents are reviewed quarterly to reflect changes in market capitalisation and liquidity.
