About

What is the DAX Performance Index?

The DAX (Deutscher Aktienindex) tracks 40 of the largest German companies trading on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange. It is unusual among major benchmarks in that it is calculated as a total-return index by default, meaning dividends are reinvested back into the index, so its level reflects performance with dividends rather than price alone.

History

Origin & evolution

Launched on 1 July 1988 with a base value of 1,000 backdated to 30 December 1987, the DAX is operated by Deutsche Börse. It expanded from 30 to 40 constituents in September 2021 to broaden its sector coverage and reduce concentration risk.
