About

What is the FTSE 100?

The FTSE 100 tracks the 100 largest companies listed on the London Stock Exchange by market capitalisation, representing roughly 80% of the UK's primary listed equity market value. Many of its constituents derive a large share of revenue overseas, so the index is often as much a play on global multinationals as on the UK domestic economy.

History

Origin & evolution

Launched on 3 January 1984 with a base value of 1,000, the index is maintained by FTSE Russell (a subsidiary of the London Stock Exchange Group). Constituents are reviewed quarterly based on closing market capitalisations.
