About

What is the Nasdaq Composite?

The Nasdaq Composite tracks every common stock and similar security listed on the Nasdaq Stock Market, roughly 3,000+ names. Because of Nasdaq's historical pull on technology and biotech listings, the Composite is heavily tilted toward those sectors and is widely used as a gauge of US growth-stock performance.

History

Origin & evolution

Launched on 5 February 1971 with a base value of 100, the same day the Nasdaq itself opened, the Composite was the world's first electronic stock-market index. It is calculated and maintained by Nasdaq, Inc.
