What is the Nifty 50?

The Nifty 50 is the flagship benchmark of the National Stock Exchange of India, capturing the 50 largest and most-traded Indian companies across 13+ sectors. It is the most widely tracked Indian equity index by both passive funds and derivatives traders, accounting for roughly two-thirds of the NSE's float-adjusted market capitalisation.

History

Origin & evolution

Launched on 22 April 1996 with a base value of 1,000 set on 3 November 1995, the Nifty was created to give domestic and international investors a single, transparent gauge of Indian large-cap performance. It is maintained by NSE Indices Ltd. and rebalanced semi-annually.
