About

What is the Nikkei 225?

The Nikkei 225 (or Nikkei Stock Average) tracks 225 large, publicly-owned companies on the Tokyo Stock Exchange Prime Market across roughly 35 sectors. It is the most quoted barometer of Japanese equity performance, comparable in stature to the Dow Jones Industrial Average in the United States.

History

Origin & evolution

Calculated continuously since 7 September 1950, the index is owned and computed by Nihon Keizai Shimbun (Nikkei Inc.). Like the Dow, it is price-weighted rather than market-cap-weighted, a legacy of the era it was designed in.
