About

What is the Russell 2000?

The Russell 2000 tracks the smallest 2,000 stocks within the broader Russell 3000 universe, making it the most widely-followed US small-cap benchmark. It is closely watched because small caps tend to be more domestically-oriented than large caps, so the index is often read as a gauge of US domestic economic health.

History

Origin & evolution

Launched in 1984 by the Frank Russell Company, the index is now maintained by FTSE Russell. Constituents are reconstituted annually each June, when the entire Russell 3000 universe is reranked by market cap and the index is rebuilt.
