AboutWhat is the S&P 500?
The S&P 500 tracks 500 of the largest US-listed companies, capturing roughly 80% of the total US equity market capitalisation. It is the world's most widely tracked equity benchmark for institutional money, most US-domiciled passive equity assets reference it directly or indirectly.
HistoryOrigin & evolution
The index in its modern 500-stock form was launched on 4 March 1957 by Standard & Poor's, evolving from earlier S&P composite indices that date back to the 1920s. Today it is maintained by S&P Dow Jones Indices, with constituents chosen by an index committee rather than a strict rule.
