What is the BSE Sensex?

The S&P BSE Sensex tracks 30 of the largest and most actively traded companies on the Bombay Stock Exchange. It is widely regarded as the pulse of the Indian equity market and is one of the most-quoted indices in the country alongside the Nifty 50.

History

Origin & evolution

Launched on 1 January 1986 with a base value of 100 set in the 1978โ€“79 financial year, the Sensex is the oldest stock index in Asia. It was originally compiled by the BSE and is now co-branded and maintained jointly with S&P Dow Jones Indices.
