About

What is the Shanghai Composite?

The SSE Composite Index tracks every single A-share and B-share listed on the Shanghai Stock Exchange, making it one of the broadest equity gauges in the world. Because it includes the entire exchange rather than a curated set of blue chips, it is closely watched as a barometer of overall Chinese equity sentiment.

History

Origin & evolution

Launched on 15 July 1991 with a base value of 100 backdated to 19 December 1990 (the SSE's first trading day), the index is calculated and maintained by the Shanghai Stock Exchange. Unlike most modern benchmarks, it is weighted by total market capitalisation rather than free float.
