The US Dollar Index measures the dollar against a basket of six currencies: euro, yen, pound, Canadian dollar, Swedish krona and Swiss franc. It is quoted as a level, not a price.
The index was created in March 1973 at a level of 100, when the major currencies began to float after the end of the Bretton Woods system. Its basket has changed once, in January 1999, when the euro replaced the German mark, French franc, Italian lira, Dutch guilder and Belgian franc. Futures on it have traded since 1985 and it is maintained by ICE Futures US.
