What is Price Near Moving Average (Proximity Signals)?
A condition flag that fires when price closes within a small band — such as 0.5% or 1.5% — of a key moving average like the 20-, 50-, 100- or 200-day.
Formula
Signal fires when: |Close − SMA(N)| ÷ SMA(N) ≤ threshold %
How to Interpret
Marks the moments when price is testing a widely watched trend line. A pullback to a rising 50- or 200-day SMA is the classic 'buy the dip at support' setup; a rally into a falling long-term average is the mirror-image resistance test. The signal marks the test — what price does next is the information.
Typical Ranges
Proximity alone is direction-neutral. The 0.5%/1.5% bands are conventions; volatile assets touch them constantly, so the signal is more meaningful for stable large-caps than high-beta names.
