What is Cosmos?

Cosmos is an ecosystem of independent, interoperable blockchains built on the Cosmos SDK and connected by the Inter-Blockchain Communication (IBC) protocol. ATOM is the staking and governance token of the Cosmos Hub, the ecosystem's flagship chain.

History

Origin & evolution

The Cosmos vision was outlined in a 2016 whitepaper by Jae Kwon and Ethan Buchman, with the Cosmos Hub mainnet launching in March 2019. The Cosmos SDK has since been used to build dozens of major chains including Binance Chain, Terra, dYdX v4, and Celestia.
