What is USD Coin?

USD Coin (USDC) is a US-dollar-pegged stablecoin issued by Circle, fully backed by cash and short-duration US Treasuries held in segregated accounts at regulated financial institutions. Reserves are attested monthly by a Big Four accounting firm.

History

Origin & evolution

USDC was launched in September 2018 by the Centre Consortium, a joint venture between Circle and Coinbase. Circle became the sole issuer in 2023 after dissolving Centre, and USDC is now natively available on more than 15 blockchains.
